Forest Pest Updates online

Project description:

Objective: Current information on the status, distribution, host range and behaviour of pests and diseases of forest trees in New Zealand made available at the press of a button.

Background: The Forest and Timber Insects in New Zealand and the Forest Pathology in New Zealand leaflet series were initiated in 1976 and now comprise a total of 86 leaflets. Over 130 organisms including insects, fungi, bacteria and algae are covered. Hard copies of the leaflets are widely used and pdf files of all leaflets are available on the Ensis, Forest Biosecurity and Protection website. Some of the information requires updating as new information about behaviour, host range and distribution and control measures becomes available. The project will use information in the Forest Health Database so that the current distribution of some selected organisms will be displayed on a digital map of New Zealand. The user will be able to customise the look of the map by panning, zooming and selecting background information to be displayed. Current host lists will also be available via this link. Development of the data collection and mapping process for 6 organisms based on existing leaflets will be covered in this project.

The second part of this project is the preparation of new electronic leaflets, with the FH Database information described above, on Essigella californica and Nectria fuckeliana.
